Hurricane Ian, one of the century’s most deadly U.S. hurricanes, grazed Georgia in September 2022. Although our communities were spared from the most devastating effects of this storm, our neighboring state of Florida took a massive hit. Ian made landfall in southwestern Florida near Cayo Costa. With maximum wind speeds of 150 miles per hour, Hurricane Ian was the strongest hurricane to hit Florida since 2018. After toppling trees and houses, flooding many areas across the state, and sending debris flying everywhere, Ian finally dissipated. Damage estimates reached approximately $50 to $66 billion worth of property and structural damage.
